Overview

Prilled urea (untreated urea) is used for the “technical” grade urea market intended for industrial applications and for applications where solution urea is required. Prilled urea’s shape is small spherical particles known as “prills”. Granular urea (fertilizer grade) is treated for longer shelf life and the production of larger granules. Because of its small size, prilled urea has been extensively used in the fertilization of sod and turf; however, the product must be used soon after manufacture because of its shorter shelf life.

Other uses include the production of water-soluble fertilizers and cattle feed. It is also used in the manufacturing of urea-formaldehyde resin. Prill urea is used in the production of diesel exhaust fluid for pollution abatement. Lastly, prilled urea is used in the dyes and pigment, plywood, and adhesive industries.
